New To Computer Games?

Perhaps you don't play computer games, but have heard about online role-playing games (RPGs). You chatted with a friend online that talked about Meridian 59, and thought online RPGs sound interesting. What are they all about?

First, what is an RPG? It's a type of game that focused on characters taking part in deeds in a fictional world. In other words, it's a game of "make-believe" in a computer operated world. You could be a brave warrior fighting against an army of monsters, a crafty spellcaster creating magical effects, or a savvy politician looking to convince people to follow your lead.

Online RPGs, like Meridian 59, take this same concept and put it online. So, your character in this world will be able to interact with other characters controlled by real people. So, a politician in an online world will need real political skills to convince and organize other players. People who enjoy chatting with others online often become very influential members of the community, even if they aren't the best at killing monsters or casting spells.

"In Meridian 59, I know EVERYONE. You might love other characters or you hate them, but at least you KNOW them." - Lord Blood, Meridian 59 player.

The game part of Meridian 59 is important because it gives you something to do besides chat and provides a context for discussion. You can do exciting things like go on quests, find out information about other people, help gather basic resources for your friends, and negotiate agreements between different groups. The game world gives a context to the actions of the players. Yet, this doesn't mean that you have to have razor-sharp reflexes in order to compete like in other video games. RPGs, unlike many other games, puts similar focus on accumulating power, finding strong allies, planning on the strategic and tactical levels, and having the appropriate knowledge rather than only focusing on who has the fastest reactions. Players in non-combat roles can be important members of a group.

The best part of this is that you can make great friends. People that played the game years ago log on to find old friends there. The bonds created by the game go deep, and meaningful friendships emerge due to the challenging nature of the game. These people are just like other people on the internet; they come from different backgrounds, different outlooks, even different countries. The community on the game is excellent, so you will undoubtedly be able to make a lot of new friends in Meridian 59.

"Online gaming can be overwhelming, but both the game design and the abundance of friendly, experienced players made learning and enjoying M59 easy and fun!" - Drone, Meridian 59 player.
