How do Meridian 59's developers improve the game?

The developers of Meridian 59 are different from many other developers; they love the game and enjoy seeing it grow. You can send gameplay feedback to the administrators and they will respond to you. Bugs are fixed quickly, and new bugs are rarely introduced. Content is made available for free downloads, not as part of a costly expansion. The developers actually play the game, so they know the important issues.  The developers care about the game.

The most important thing for an online RPG is to have a stable game. If the game is not stable, no amount of new content is going to make the game more interesting. Therefore, the developers take the time to make sure that all new additions do not disrupt the game. In Meridian 59's long history, there has been very little unplanned downtime. The main game servers themselves have never crashed and lost data after Near Death Studios, Inc. relaunched the game in 2002.

"The character development is fantastic, and for those characters (like mine!) who have built a reputation on being lovers of peace, there are Frenzies for an hour or so every other weekend. Players can kill and be killed during a frenzy without consequences. A Frenzy is the only time the server comes down. It usually takes about half an hour for the servers to come back up again, but that's the only time I ever see the servers go down." - Gertrude, Meridian 59 player.

One of the great things about online games is their dynamic nature. New areas, new monsters, new items, even new spells and abilities can be added to the game on a regular basis to provide new challenges and opportunities for players. Meridian 59 takes advantage of this nature of online games as much as possible. Of course, each new addition is considered carefully before it is added to the game. Balanced PvP (Player vs. Player) combat is fun, and it must remain balanced in order to remain fun.

The developers are still making changes to the game.  A new rendering engine was added to the game to improve the presentation, showing that the game has new life even after all these years.

Because of developer commitment, most of the worst aspects of other games don't affect Meridian 59. Meridian 59 has eliminated the worst aspects of the "treadmill" found in other games that demand you invest endless hours finding a group to advance a fraction of the way to a level. Many players are happy to log on and go hunt monsters for an hour, or cast a spell for half an hour before logging off for the night. In addition, Meridian 59's deep gameplay allow for a lot of secrets to be hidden and discovered. The game's map allows you to map out the world as you explore it, allowing you to have a personal set of maps. The game allows for a wide variety of playstyles, and doesn't force you to conform to the "vision" of the game.  The developers also take an active stance against cheaters in the game.  Cheaters are routinely detected and banned from the game.

In the end, Meridian 59 is a game that's simply fun to play. The players have played the rest, and they continue to enjoy the superior qualities of Meridian 59.  Even after you've explored most of the world, there's always something new to discover. Information is very valuable in a game like Meridian 59. What will you discover that gives you an advantage?

"I've played many other online RPGs. After reading about Meridian 59 on the web, I decided to give it a shot. The design blew me away. Not only does Meridian 59 have the BEST player vs. player action, it also excels in many other areas such as its robust guild system, player housing, tons of spells/skills, and unique items. I only wish I had started playing sooner!" - Dandy, Meridian 59 player.
