Why is Meridian 59 better than other online games?

What makes Meridian 59 a better choice than other games? Many things, but let's focus on something important: price. You want to spend your entertainment money wisely and want to get the best deal. How does Meridian 59 compares in cost to other games.

Per month charges:
EverQuest: $12.95
Asheron's Call: $12.95
Asheron's Call 2: $12.95
Dark Age of Camelot: $12.95
Ultima Online: $12.99
Anarchy Online: $14.95
Star Wars Galaxies: $14.99
Meridian 59: $10.95
(Prices accurate as of 2/20/04)

So, Meridian 59 is cheaper per month than any other online RPG. But, monthly fee is only part of the equation in the total cost of the game. Most of those other games require you to buy a $30-50 box before playing. How much does this affect the price of a game? (Note: Prices are rounded up to the next whole dollar.)

Let's take a look at EverQuest (EQ) for example. EQ is a large game, but in order to enjoy the game you have to buy eight (8) expansions in addition to buying the basic box. According to the prices on the publisher's own store for digital downloads, you'll be paying $125 to get all the expansions. Six months of subscription will cost $78 in addition to the price for the expansions. Total price to play EQ for 6 months: $208. And, that doesn't include the expansion that will likely come out during that time and cost you an additional $30 if you want to play with your friends in the best areas.

Compare that to Meridian 59. You don't have to buy a box, and you get all the updates for free. All you pay is the cheaper monthly subscription fee, which comes to just under $66 for the same six months. Plus, you get all events, upgrades, and expansions included with that price.

Grand Totals: $203 (or more) for EverQuest, $66 for Meridian 59.

Why pay $205 for six months of entertainment when you can pay only $66? EQ is a good game, but it simply isn't worth over 300% more than Meridian 59.

However, cheaper does not mean inferior. While 3DO owned the game, people paid up to $30 per account per month to play the game. We feel that price is too high to allow a wider variety of people to enjoy the game.

So, what do you get for that subscription? You get a fun, proven game that offers you something new and exciting. You get a chance to play a classic game with balanced Player vs. Player combat. You also get to interact with a tight community that is very friendly to new players. You get a game with a long history of stability and fun. Thousands of other people enjoy the game, and are often willing to help you. It's a great deal especially at such a low price.

"I am never bored on Meridian, after years of playing I can always find something to do. There is no other game out there that I can say that about. Give it a try. For $10.95 a month what do you have to lose?" - Kree, Meridian 59 player.
